'The Women of the Bible Speak: The Wisdom of 16 Women and Their Lessons for Today' by Shannon Bream compares and contrasts the stories of a variety of women from the Old and New Testaments.

"May He give us the warrior's heart of Jael and Deborah, the insight of Sarah and Hagar, the steadfast hope of Rachel and Leah, the devotion of Tamar and Ruth, the quick courage of Esther and Rahab, and the prophetic voice of Miriam and Hannah. And may He give us the love that filled the lives of the women He himself know and loved on earth: Mary and Martha of Bethany, Mary Magdalene and His own beloved mother, Mary of Nazareth". (Page 220).

The women are depicted as complex, emotional and relational individuals and the text openly and empathetically explores their motivations, and in some cases, deeply flawed decisions. Each woman's story is told in a straightforward and engaging manner which highlights the key narrative and themes. Significantly, every woman's story is linked to the gospel message and prompts readers to think about how key lessons can be applied to modern life.

"The life of every woman we have looked at can best be understood in Christ. Some of the women we have studied were fortunate enough to know Jesus in person and to be with Him as He walked among us here on earth. Some of them lived long, long before His time, yet we can see the miraculous way they were woven into His story long before Jesus arrived in human form". (Page 199).

There are relevant Bible passages included throughout as well as important historical context provided. Each chapter also concludes with Bible references for further reading and a series of open-ended questions for consideration and reflection. These questions would be ideal for small study groups, or for a younger or newer Christian to discuss with a mentor.

The publishers recommend this book for teenagers and women. Some of the stories' themes may be too mature and certain theological concepts may be too complex for younger readers.

The author is also a journalist and attorney. Shannon Bream has written several books about the Bible and has developed companion workbooks and colouring books. I am looking forward to reading other titles in this series, especially 'The Mothers and Daughters of the Bible Speak: Lessons on Faith from Nine Biblical Families'.
